Edition 2/10/2010 Section 6c VA 627 to Cowpasture River at VA 678 2.6 miles  Cowpasture River, looking north off VA 678 bridge.
Parking 1. North end of section: From I-81 Exit 225, take VA 262 south to US 250, west 17 miles, left on VA 629 (Deerfield Valley Road), go 19.7 miles, turn right on VA 627, Scotchtown Road, go 2.6 miles, parking for 2 or 3 cars off right side of road. 2. South end of section: end of section: From I-81 Exit 225, take VA 262 south to US 250, west 17 miles, left on VA 629 (Deerfield Valley Road), go 22.4 miles, turn right on VA 678, go 3.3 miles, parking on both sides of road just before bridge over Cowpasture River. Shuttle South to north: Continue 3.1 miles on VA 678, right on VA 627 (Scotchtown Draft) and go 2.6 miles, parking on left. North to south: Continue 2.6 miles on VA 627, left on VA 678 (Indian Draft) and go 3.1 miles, parking on both sides after bridge over Cowpasture River. Miles Data 0.0 North end of section, VA 627, Scotchtown Draft Road, elev. 1957'. A sign on the south side of the road says, "SHENANDOAH MTN TRAIL -> / <- STATE RT. 678 2.5 / STATE RT. 250 25 ->." Great Eastern Trail follows Shenandoah Mountain Trail past this sign and up a hill to the right. 0.4 Trail meets and follows logging road, descending along the ridge. 2.2 At red blazes marking the National Forest property boundary, trail turns right off road and descends steep hill. Multiple paths have cut into the steep shale slope. Use the uppermost, descending gradually. 2.4 Shenandoah Mountain Trail ends on VA 678. Follow VA 678 to right. 2.6 Cross Cowpasture River on VA 678 bridge, elev. 1517'. Leave North River Ranger District and enter Warm Springs Ranger District. South end of section, GET continues on VA 678. Trail Description, South to North

Leave Warm Springs Ranger District and enter North River Ranger District. 0.2 At a point opposite a telephone pole, enter woods on left of road, and follow one of many paths cut into the steep shale slope. Use the upper, most gradual one, up to the top of the ridge, where the Shenandoah Mountain Trail ends at the National Forest property boundary (red blazes). Take the unblazed Shenandoah Mountain Trail, a forest road in open woods, north (left). 0.4 Reach top of steep hill, find a forest road and follow it left, uphill. 2.2 Trail leaves logging road. 2.6 VA 627, Scotchtown Draft Road, elev. 1957'. North end of section. GET continues across VA 627 on Shenandoah Mountain Trail.
