Hupp Families of unknown connections:
John Hupp of Rockingham County
Samuel R. Hupp
St. Clair Hupp
The records of Rockingham County have not yielded good results
regarding family reconstruction as have the Shenandoah County records.
In Shenandoah County, wills and deeds gave the names of children and
parents, and often told which county and state a person moved to. Also,
even marriage records told father's names even of grooms sometimes,
(compared to Pleasants County, WV, which did not record the names of
parents until the 1960's).
Attempts to find similar information in Rockingham County was
futile. It has gotten so that when I find a Hupp somewhere out west
who was born in Virginia and I do not have his name in my lists, I
figure he was probably from Rockingham County.
John Hupp of Rockingham County
John Hupp married Catherine Stoutemeyer in 1803 (the record gives
the year, but no date). For some time I had difficulty figuring his
place in the Hupp family, for there were more John Hupps than I could
fit. First I thought he was Balser's son, but that didn't check out
(see section C). So I had three John Hupps to marry, and only two
possibilities: the sons of Peter and Casper. Casper's son's life has
been fairly well established, so it could not be he.
For John and Catherine's descendants, see I-15.
Samuel R. Hupp
I know very little about Samuel R. Hupp himself, but he has a good
number of present day descendants. Samuel was recorded in only one
census (1840). His marriage was also recorded in Rockingham County. I
have found no deeds bearing his name. No estate was sold after he
died. From what I can tell from the 1840 census, Samuel was born in
the 1790's. He died in the 1840's.
Samuel R. Hupp married Catherine Minnick, the daughter of Mathias
Minnick, on 12/19/1831. (There is a Mathias Minnick buried in the
Rader Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Timberville. He lived from
3/10/1779 to 9/20/1860. His wife's name was Christina, and she died on
12/20/1873.) Samuel and Catherine had six children (see I-2).
Samuel could be a son of John Hupp (son of Peter) and Rachel Goans.
If Rachel died when Samuel was young, he might have been raised by some
of her relatives, and not by his father. This might explain why I find
no place for him among the Hupp families as shown in the censuses.

four children
A letter by a daughter of Dewitt Clinton Hupp states there were
only four brothers-- William and Elizabeth were not known. I know of
them because of the 1850 census. Samuel had died, but Catherine was
left as the head of the household. Living with her were Elizabeth, 12;
Mathias, 8; William, 17; and Elizabeth Whitmier, 65. Catherine was
listed as being 47, although she was actually 38. The other children
were "farmed out", and Calvin was living with Peter Minnick in
Shenandoah County. I find no record of Sylvester or DeWitt in the 1850
census.
I figure that Samuel and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth must have
died not long after 1850, for there is no family memory of her. Nor is
there any memory of William, who may have moved away before his brothers
grew up.
Catherine lived the rest of her life with Mathias and his family.
Most of that time they lived near Plains Mills in Rockingham County
(this is about five miles west of New Market). An atlas of Rockingham
County, dated 1886 indicates three Hupp houses in that area: Calvin
Hupp, Wm Hupp, and T. Hupp. It had me wondering for a long time who
that would be, since I could not find any Hupps in the valley at the
time whose name began with a "T". I even had a teenaged friend to tell
me that was proof that I was alive 100 years ago. The answer is that
"T" stands for "Tice", which is what Mathias Hupp sometimes went by.
The Wm. there is not Samuel and Catherine's son, but apparently a son
of Calvin's.
It was this area which was known as the town of Hupp about that
time. There was a Hupp post office between 1888 and 1902. Interest-
ingly enough, it was between 1886 and 1890 that this family of Hupps
deserted this area. Calvin's first wife died in 1885 and he moved to
West Virginia. His son William moved to Missouri. Catherine and
Mathias moved north to the Toms Brook area. Both Mathias and Catherine
died in 1891 and are buried in the Toms Brook Cemetery. The rest of
Mathias' family moved to the Strasburg area.

Calvin lived his early life beside Peter Minnick in the Mt. Clifton
area of Shenandoah County, Va. Later, he lived for a time in the
Plains Mills area (I have not been able to find him in the 1870 or 1880
censuses of Rockingham County). Sarah, his first wife, died in 1888,
and Calvin went to West Virginia after that. He married Margaret E.
(Cline) McCartney in 1893. By this marriage there were two daughters.
Calvin and Margaret are buried in the Mt. Pleasant UME Church Cemetery
at Thorton, WV, in Taylor County.

Sylvester and DeWitt C. Hupp, sons of Samuel R. Hupp
Sylvester and DeWitt moved to Madison County, Indiana soon after
reaching adulthood. Since they were not recorded in the 1850 census,
I would never have known about their connection, except for a letter
written by a Mrs. Stella (Hupp) Bolles in 1961. It was passed to me
by Mrs. Kathryn Corwin of Front Royal, Va. It originally accompanied
a letter to J.C. Hupp of Fairmont, WV, dated 8/21/1961. She was a
Curriculum Librarian at the County Schools Office of San Bernardino,
California. It was typed, and I have made only minor adjustments
to the form of the text (like single spacing the lines). Note--
she refers to Sylvester as Wesley. These are the same person. All
official references to him-- marriage record, census, tombstone--
write his name as Sylvester. Many dates that were unknown to Mrs.
Bolles can be found on I-2.
Samuel Hupp - Date and place of birth unknown. German-Holland
descent. Were very early settlers in Virginia.
Catherine Hupp - Scotch descent or German, not sure. Maiden
name unknown, although may have been Minnick since there
were cousins named Minnick - or, (also there were cousins
named Miller.)
Minnick, of U.S. Treasury Dept., lived in Washington, D.C.
(was a cousin whom Father visited in Washington, D.C.)
Samuel died before my Father, DeWitt Clinton, came to Indiana,
(settled in Middletown, Indiana.)
Catherine died after my oldest sister, "Lulu", born 1871. The
parents were farmers in Shenandoah Valley, Va., Rockingham
Co., old address was Broadway.
Allen Moyers, an old friend of family, and who corresponded
with our family for years lived in Broadway and died in 1932.
He had a daughter who lived in Broadway also.
Samuel and Catherine Hupp had four boys and no girls, born in
Rockingham Co., Virginia.
DeWitt Clinton - born June 6, 1840; died July 7, 1909
(69 years, 1 month, 1 day)
Mathias - called "Tice". Very distinguished looking, appearance
of a Deacon. Stayed in Virginia - dates unknown
Calvin - dates unknown, stayed in Virginia
Wesley - dates unknown, came to Middletown, Indiana when
DeWitt did. Moved to Anderson, Indiana, then,
near Alexandria, Indiana, prior to 1870.

Wesley married Sallie (Miller?), she was of German descent;
Wesley was a carpenter and lived well, had five children-
3 boys and 2 girls, Will, John, Frank, Mary ("bad girl"),
Cassie had club foot. All lived near Elwood, Indiana or
in the country near Anderson. Wesley was murdered by the
neighbor who lived across the road, named Frazer (or Fraser).
Wesley was building a new barn, both men went to Anderson to
buy lumber, Frazer became inebriated. Aunt Sallie went
across the road on Sunday afternoon to visit Frazer's family.
Frazer wanted Wesley to come over, he refused because "Frazer
was too drunk". Lamps were empty - no oil - so Frazer rang,
rang dinner bell for "Wes" to come over - as Wes entered
Frazer pulled a revolver from under his pillow killing him.
Frazer was taken to Anderson jail, and on Monday morning (next
day) hung himself with red bandana handkerchief. Frazer family
gave "Aunt Sallie" $1500 to settle, so no trial.
DeWitt Clinton Hupp (b. 6/6/1840) and Martha Rolfe (b. 8/10/1850)
Married March 24, 1870, lived on 160 acre Rolfe farm Anderson,
Indiana, with Martha's father in log cabin, until Malachi Rolfe
died a year later. Martha was willed 30 acres and the cabin.
To this union were born nine children - five boys and four girls.
1. Samantha Luvenia (Lulu) 2/10/1871 - 8/28/1958
2. George Hildebert 5/15/1873 - 2/2/1902
3. Mary Catherine 12/18/1875 - 3/18/1949
4. Daisy Maud 9/19/1878 - Lives Tampa, Fla.
5. Frederick Lee 1/20/1882 - 8/20/1924
6. Raymond Rolfe 12/12/1884 - 7/19/1943
7. DeWitt Clinton 6/27/1887 - Last heard from with Shell
Oil Company, South America
8. Victor Hugo 4/7/1890 - 4/12/1952
9. Stella Gertrude 2/8/1897
Father visited Virginia twice, brought home specimens of "Lu Rea Cave",
Endless Cavern (Crystal Caves discovered in later years). Went to
Virginia last time in fall of 1881.
His occupations were:
1. Learned "Copper Trade" - first at Middletown, Indiana.
2. Farmed after married - sold farm 1881 - 30 acres for $1500.00
Moved to town of Alexandria, Indiana
3. Taught school
4. Went to Kansas with the "Westward Expansion Craze" - paid $50
down on a farm. His brother "Wes" was killed so had to return
to Indiana to settle "Wes's" estate.
5. Started feed store business with man named Charles Reynolds -
not a success.
6. Went into grocery business - had ice house, groceries, bacon,
dishes, (Queensware) - had too many charge accounts - went
broke. Started to build brick house - workers took groceries
in trade.
Struck gas near Alexandria, Indiana, town boomed, sold house
for $1000 - built another in New Scott's addition for $100
a room. (10 room house)
7. Justice of Peace after grocery store failure (married many couples)
8. Taught school again - Star School, Alexandria, Indiana.
9. Nursery business - went to Rochester, N.Y., to buy trees, set
out all Popular trees in new "Scott's Addition", Alexandria,
Indiana.

10. Because Father was a Veteran of Civil War (1861-1867?), was
given Rural Mail Route - longest rural route in State of
Indiana, was last employment- 1902-1909.
Went to Soldiers Home, Marion, Indiana, in spring of 1909, when
he became unable to carry the mail - died suddenly July 7, 1909,
early in the morning, following a stroke which occurred while
bathing. On June the 6th, 1906 (6th month, 6th day & year 1906 -
he was 66 years of age).
Note: There are only 3 Hupp boys, sons of Victor H. Hupp, carrying
forward the Hupp name.
DeWitt George - A State Motor Patrol officer, Santa Ana,
California
Donn Lee - Escrow Dept, Loan Co., San Francisco, California
Victor Warren - Concrete block contractor, Garden Grove,
California. (near Disneyland)
In addition, there were some handwritten notes about the deaths of
her siblings:
1. Samantha (Lulu) died in Los Angeles
2. George H. " " Alexandria, Ind.
3. Mary C. " " " "
5. Frederick L. died in Buffalo, Wyo
6. Raymond R. died Central Point, Oregon
8. Victor H. died in Santa Ana, Calif.
This letter holds all I know about DeWitt's family, except for
some censuses. All they add to my knowledge was that some of the
members of this family had moved to California by 1910.

Catherine Minnick, born 9/15/1841. He lived his whole life with his
mother. On 12/19/1866 he married Amanda Estep, the daughter of
Benjamin and Lucinda Estep. Mathias was described as being very
dignified (see I-6). Mathias died about nine months before his mother
did. They are both buried in the Toms Brook Cemetery.
Mathias' son David was a railroad man, and he settled in Strasburg.

St. Clair Hupp
During the 1850's a man named St. Clair Hupp moved from Virginia
to Illinois. He first settled in McLean County, and then in Champaign
County. The family is rather obscure in the records, and it would have
escaped my notice except for the fact that St. Clair Hupp is my great-
great-great-grandfather.
St. Clair Hupp married Rebecca Taflinger in 1854, and they had
seven children. As Taflinger is a rarer name even than Hupp, I was able
to trace her family-- back to Rockingham County, Virginia. She was the
daughter of John Taflinger and Sally Sherman. John's father was also
John Taflinger and Sally's father was Peter Sherman.
By process of elimination, I have concluded that St. Clair Hupp was
also from Rockingham County. All that I have left as possibilities
for him are that he was a son of Isaac Hupp and Elizabeth Barns (see
B-27), or, more likely, he was the same as William, son of Samuel R.
Hupp and Catherine Minnick (see I-2).
Family tradition tells nothing of St. Clair Hupp's background other
than that he was from Virginia, which official records confirm. But
by 1873, when he died, Illinois did not yet record the names of the
parents of the deceased (Virginia had been doing so since 1852).
There was an obituary in the Champaign Co. Gazette, dated
11/26/1873:
Mr. S.C. Hupp, of this place, died on
the 22d instant of typhoid pnuemonia.
The deceased was an old resident, form-
erly from the east. His funeral sermon
was delivered by Rev. M. Everest, the re-
mains were interred with the honors of
Odd-fellowship.
Well! That sure gives a lot of detail about the man!
I must give credit to the connection of St. Clair Hupp to William,
son of Samuel and Catherine to Robert A. Hupp of Warrenville, Illinois,
my father's cousin. He had been doing genealogy work some time before
I ever started. This theory has two things going for it: 1. the ages
agree for the two men, and 2. the 1880 census, which was taken just
after the birth of my great-grandfather, St. Clair Thomas Hupp. In it
his name was recorded as William S. So perhaps that was a recalling of
his grandfather. Of course this does not prove anything, but it is
something. For some time I rejected this theory because the Rockingham
County Atlas of 1886 showed a William Hupp living next to Calvin, and I
knew that Calvin was a brother to William. Further checks, however,
showed that that William was Calvin's son, instead.
St. Clair and Rebecca lived in the Ludlow area, in the northern
part of Champaign County. They are buried in the Maplewood Cemetery
north of Rantoul, and are some of their children and grandchildren.

The family of John Hupp of Rockingham County, Va.
John Hupp and Catherine Stoutemeyer were discussed on I-1. During
the 1820's they moved their family to Licking County, Ohio, settling in
the town of Newark. Catherine died in 1829, and she is buried in the
Old Graveyard in Newark Township.
John and Catherine had many children: the 1810 census shows them
with one boy and one girl, by 1820 there were four boys and two girls
(two of the boys between 10 and 16). The 1830 census shows no more
children born after 1820. I do not know the names of John and
Catherine's daughters. The sons were John, Jacob, Edward, and James.
John and Catherine's son John moved out and started his family
before Catherine died. The 1830 census lists him as living in Hartford
Township in Licking County. During the 1830's he moved with his family
to LaSalle County, Illinois (halfway between Chicago and Peoria).
In the 1850's John went to California, moving to Trinity Co.,
California, where he is listed in the 1860 census as a lawyer. John's
family stayed behind in Illinois. I have no contact with this family,
and have followed them only through censuses.
Jacob Hupp married Matilda Lawson in Rockingham County-- years
after his family had moved to Licking County. Jacob and Matilda were
in Licking County during the 1840 and 1860 censuses.
I am not certain that the James M. Hupp of Fairfield County is
the son of John and Catherine. John and Catherine did have a son named
James, and he was the about the same age as the James in Fairfield
County. But there is a record of a tombstone in the Old Graveyard in
Newark Township stating "James Hupp - died 1851 - aged 35 years". If
this is the John and Catherine's son, of course it cannot be someone who
lived to 1894. Yet it could be someone else, and I have no other family
to get a James Hupp of the right age. More research into this may
yield more certainty. In the meantime, I will include the descendants
of James Hupp of Fairfield County with this family.
The 1840 census states that John Hupp and Edward Hupp, both in
Newark, were involved with commerce.
